How to choose a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.

Enrolling in a WPS Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan is not difficult. If you are outside of your initial enrollment period or a special enrollment period you may need to answer health underwriting questions. Choose the scenario below that best fits your current situation.

You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan, any time of the year, as long as you are not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan. If you are outside of your initial enrollment period or a special enrollment period, you will need to answer underwriting questions.

If you joined a Medicare Advantage Plan when you first became eligible for Medicare Parts A and B at age 65—and within one year of joining the Medicare Advantage Plan, you decide to leave—you can at any time. Or if you are outside of the one-year limit, you may need to wait until the annual enrollment period of your Medicare Advantage plan. Once that window is open, disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Plan and go to Original Medicare. Once you've done that, you may be able to enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan, but you may need to answer health underwriting questions.

  • Any time you're still covered by the group health plan with 20 or more employees.
  • During the 8-month period that begins the month after your employment ends or your coverage ends, whichever happens first.
  • Your coverage starts the first day of the month after you sign up. You won't have to pay a late enrollment penalty if you sign up during a special enrollment period. Once on Medicare, you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan without answering underwriting questions if you enroll within the 6-month enrollment period starting with the first month you're enrolled in Medicare Part B.
  • If you already have Medicare Parts A and B, you will only have 63 days to apply for a Medicare Supplement Plan.

Depending on your situation, you can add coverage riders to your Medicare Supplement Insurance to personalize your coverage to your needs. Start by selecting your Base Plan option. You can then add other available riders that cover things like Additional Home Health Care, Foreign Travel Emergency and more.

A WPS Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan helps cover costs that Medicare doesn’t pay for—such as deductibles, copays and coinsurance.9 These plans are available exclusively to Wisconsin residents and offer flexible options you can customize to your health and budget.

Most states offer Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans labeled A–N. But Wisconsin uses a unique model: you start with a state-standardized Base Plan and then choose from optional coverage riders to create a plan that fits your needs. WPS helps you do that with clear guidance and expert support.

The Wisconsin Basic Plan through WPS includes:

  • Coverage for Medicare Part A and B coinsurance.
  • First three pints of blood.
  • Skilled nursing facility care.
  • Home health care and more.

This plan is designed to be a strong foundation—and you can add more benefits if you’d like.

Yes! WPS offers a variety of optional add-on benefits, such as:

  • Coverage for emergency care during foreign travel.
  • Additional home health care.
  • Part B Excess charges.

You choose only the benefits that matter most to you—we’ll help make it simple.

Your best time to enroll is during your 6-month Medigap open enrollment period—that’s when you’re both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window, you can’t be turned down or charged more due to health conditions.

Yes, WPS offers plans for Medicare-eligible individuals under 65 in Wisconsin. Our local experts can help you understand your options and guide you toward the right fit.

Not directly. Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans focus on medical expenses. For help with prescription drugs, you’ll want to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D Plan.

If you’re moving into Wisconsin and want to explore new Medicare Supplement options, WPS can help you see if a new plan can meet your needs. If you’re moving out of Wisconsin, you can keep your plan and should contact our customer service team to see if your rate will change. Either way, our Wisconsin-based support team is here to walk you through the process.
